The 1896 Emancipation Run - the legendary

"London to Brighton"

For the first time in English history legal restrictions in regard to the use of motor-cars on the public highways, except when preceded by a man with a red flag, had been removed, and we were to be allowed to drive a car on the road at a speed not exceeding twelve miles an hour.

The run from London to Brighton had been arranged to celebrate this important event.

“The date - 14th November 1896." So spoke one of the pioneers of early motoring, who witnessed the occasion. Three de Dion Boutons were entered for the event.
